Sunday 28 February was the public opening of the Clem7 Tunnel - linking the southern side of Brisbane with the northern side without the need to drive thru all the city streets/traffic lights etc ... you get the idea.
To walk thru the tunnel you had to register for free tickets. A friend of a friend got some and we were invited to join them.
The organisers strongly suggested using public transport (eg free buses would be running from selected terminals) to get you to the northern end. (for some reason no foot entry was allowed from the southern end but buses could go thru there
)
Our group drove to one bus station, caught a bus to the nearest designated terminal and eagerly waited with perhaps a 100 other souls for the free buses (supposed to be every 5 minutes) to start coming. An hour and a half later not one bus had stopped at our terminal and the crowd had swelled to lots of hundreds of grumpy peoples. It was quite dangerous for those at the front as crowd swell could have pushed them (read that as us who were at the front) onto the roadway if a bus ever did come along. (Lots passed us, but of course they were full from other places).
Disappointed we headed back to our cars and enjoyed coffee and cakes in that shopping centre.
Moral of the story ... never believe public transport can be organised for the masses even if they say it has been.
Lots of peoples did get to go thru ... here is the story
